Character Analysis

Anne is a very intelligent girl who tries to tell her mother that there are ghosts in the house and that she can talk to them. Anne doesn't give up and draws a picture of the ghosts that she has seen and shows them to her mother which is shocked because she had seen pictures of similar people to what Anne drew. Anne one could say is pretty straight forward as she doesn't play games and is very serious about what she says and does. Anne scares her brother Nicholas by telling him about the ghosts and Anne stands very brave as she isn't scared. Anne changes at the end as she finds out that the new nanny and the servants are all dead and they cant just see them but hear them and talk to them.

Plot Summary

The film The Others by Alejandro Amenabar is a horror film that takes place in a mansion in New Jersey. The children are sick and cant see any little speck of light as this will cause them to break out and begin to blister all over there bodies. The children stay inside as they cant go out into the sun and study as that is what there mother makes them do. The children miss there father who has been gone in the war for a long time and ask there mother everyday when he will come home. The children try to let there mother know that there is a ghost named Victor that they can communicate with, but there mother doesn't believe them. This all changes when she herself begins to hear noises and hears doors open and close. At the end they come to realize that they are the ghosts and that they are dead.

Setting Analysis

The film is set in a Mansion that is in New Jersey. But what is strange is that a family so small lives in a mansion that could possibly house 10 to 15 people. They also don't have that approach as to being the perfect family as the father of the kids in a war more specifically World War II and that causes the children to miss there father. The mansion appears to be as if it was haunted this is because when the mother of the children runs out of the mansion and into the woods she gets caught in this immense fog that enables her to continue and she has to turn back around. Also something that is strange is that when anyone opens a door they have to lock the door behind them which clearly symbolizes superstition. The children claim to hear many noises and cant stress much to their mother that there is a ghost named Victor that they can communicate with.

Biography

The Others was directed by Alejandro Amenabar who is a well known person for his films. According to the Internet Movie Database Alejandro was born in Santiago, Chile. His families life was bad as when he was young his mother had just fought through the Spanish Civil War and decided to take her family and flee to Spain. Alejandro studied at a university in Madrid which was when he produced many of his works like, The Sea Inside (2004), Tesis (1996), and Open Your Eyes (1997). Alejandro is a very interesting man as many people often infer what is going to happen in his films he still doesn't give up. He also states that this is the beginning and that he will be making projects that his audience will one day enjoy.

Proposal

The horror film The Others, is a film that if someone was to ask me if I would want to see it I would not be interested. The reason is because horror films are not as scary as they used to be and they don't affect me as they used to. It is not scary as the early horror film Friday 13, with the use of music and sounds make you want to jump out of your seat and run out of the theater and not come back. After seeing the trailer my mind changed as it left a blank in me and in order to fill in the blank I would have to see the film. It is a horror film that is supposed to scare audiences but it is funny and the use of sounds makes it scary at times. And I assure you that I will watch the film a couple more times just so that I can get a better understanding of what actually happened to the family and why the story is told from the point of view of death and not the other way around.
